5/12/14 - AC’s Watson Signs with Grambling State University Basketball; Lake Charles Native Led Lady Roadrunners in Scoring in 2013-14
If Yosha Watson didn’t wear a number on her uniform, she’d still be easy to spot on a basketball court.
She’s the one flying all over the place, usually hitting the floor after a lay-up or steal.
Watson, who led Angelina College’s Lady Roadrunners in both scoring and steals, recently signed with Grambling State University beginning in the fall of 2014.
Watson finished the season with a 13.3 points-per-game scoring average and 42 steals. She was also among team leaders in rebounds (6.69 per game) and assists (2.3 per game). Her all-around game and non-stop effort caught the eyes of several scouts, but Watson, a Lake Charles, Louisiana native, said Grambling State is the perfect fit for her.
“I love the conference (Southwestern Athletic Conference) they’re in,” Watson said. “It’s so competitive. Plus it’s a little closer to home, and I’m looking forward to having my family and friends come see me play.”
A guard/forward hybrid with a relentless motor, Watson sees herself as a rebounding plus for the Lady Tigers.
“I think I’ll fit in as a rebounder and defensive player for them, plus I know I can score,” Watson said. “I want to bring a lot of intensity to the team.”
AC head coach Byron Coleman
“Coach (Patrica) Cage-Bibbs is back at Grambling for her second stint there, and they’re just trying to get the program back on top,” Coleman said. “She’s an excellent coach, and I think Yosha felt she’d feel more at home with someone who’ll continue to push her and make her work hard.”
Watson said she plans to continue majoring in Business while at Grambling State. Her parents are LaKeisha Doucet and Jammie Watson.
