AC Adds New Heavy Equipment Operator Program

Angelina College now offers a Heavy Equipment Operator program. The first class begins Oct. 1.

“I’m pleased to announce that we opened registration this week on Tuesday, and we have already enrolled 12 students, the maximum number for the class,” said Tim Ditoro, Dean of Community Services.

Students who successfully complete the program will receive a Heavy Equipment Operator Level 1 credential through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).  Students will learn to operate bulldozers, motor graders, and excavators through use of six heavy equipment simulators. Three of the simulators were procured with a grant from Texas Mutual Insurance Company to provide safety-related training to the public. Three additional simulators will be provided by Workforce Solutions Deep East Texas and the City of Lufkin 4B Economic Development Corporation through a matching grant program of the Texas Workforce Commission.

The program includes the following topics: NCCER’s Core Curriculum (Basic Safety, Intro to Construction Math, Intro to Hand Tools, Intro to Power Tools, Intro to Construction Drawings, Intro to Basic Rigging, Basic Communication Skills, Basic Employability Skills, and Intro to Material Handling), Orientation to the Trade, Heavy Equipment Safety, Identification of Heavy Equipment, Basic Operational Techniques, Utility Tractors, Introduction to Earthmoving, and Grades.

Specific safety topics in the program include basic safety concepts, causes of safety incidents, recognition and avoidance of safety hazards on the job, prevention of falls and struck-by injuries, vehicle hazards, trench safety, electrical safety, respiratory hazards, and safety in heavy equipment operation, among others.

The tuition cost of the Heavy Equipment Operator course is $500. The grant from Texas Mutual Insurance Company provided $450 of this amount for students who enrolled in the first course, so each student paid only $50.
