Angelina College Partners with Kiwanis to Provide Vaccines

Angelina College and GEAR UP are partnering with the Kiwanis Club of Lufkin to provide meningitis vaccinations to seniors at GEAR UP high schools. Sixty-four students took advantage of the opportunity at a vaccination clinic Dec. 12 at Lufkin High School. The Angelina County & Cities Health District is planning more vaccination clinics at Lufkin and Central high schools.

AC’s GEAR UP coordinator, Dana Smithhart coordinated the initiative. “GEAR UP survey data indicates that the required meningitis vaccination is a barrier for many students,” said Smithhart.

Dr. Michael Simon, Angelina College President said, “We are so grateful to the Kiwanis Club of Lufkin for providing this vaccine free of charge. It’s one of the few things that are require to attend college that you cannot pay with financial aid. For some students, having to pay any fee at all would be an obstacle.”

Lufkin High School will hold another vaccination clinic in April. Students can sign up by contacting their counselors.
