Head Coach Mark Mattson and Associate Coach Barbara Mattson enter their fourth season as Lady Roadrunner softball coaches, having led the team to the 2014 NJCAA Division I National Championship in just their third year guiding the program. The title was the first in Angelina College athletics history, and the Lady ‘Runners became the first Texas team to capture the NJCAA Division I title since the tournament’s inception in 1977.

As a result, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association named the Mattsons the Coaching Staff of the Year for NJCAA’s Division I. The couple received the award at an NFCA national convention held in Las Vegas in December of 2014.
In 2015, the Lady Roadrunner softball team again reached the conference tournament after a record-breaking season. Nearly every offensive record in AC’s softball history got a re-write.
Mark Mattson arrived at AC following an impressive run as head coach at North Dakota State College of Science, where he was a two-time Coach of the Year while leading his teams to a pair of conference championships and three appearances in the regional tournament in his four seasons at the helm. The NDSCS Lady Wildcats led the nation in homers for two consecutive years while earning Two-Time Academic All-American honors.

A lifelong player himself – he first played as a five-year old, and was part of the 1998 Men’s Fast Pitch National Championship team in 1998 – Mattson served three years as assistant head coach at Middle Tennessee State University, where his team established a new school record for wins in a season while winning the Ohio Valley Conference title en route to a berth in the College World Series. Mattson also spent time at Mayville State University (NAIA) and Adams State University (Colorado); his teams there averaged 58 home runs per season and qualified for the conference tournament for the first time in seven years. As a hitting and pitching coach at Wingate University (Division II), Mattson led his team to the program’s third-best season home-run total while helping his pitching staff to an all-time program record of 18 shutouts in a season.

The 2014 Lady Roadrunners shattered several program records, including home runs in a season (61) and wins in a season (42), among others. In addition, the 2014 Lady Roadrunners were named to the Academic All-American list with a team-wide 3.3 GPA. Lady ‘Runner Kassie James was a two-time All-American at AC, and Gia Johns made the All-American list in 2014.

The Mattsons live in Lufkin with sons Mike and Juco and daughter Marki.
