Camp Roadrunner Course Descriptions

Make Your First Video Game! | $110 | June 3 – 6 | Ages 8-17
If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Conceptualization, play experience, level design, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we’ll explore. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to have fun. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers, Mac versions can be created after the program for $15 conversion fee.

Video Game Animation | $110 | June 3 – 6 | Ages 8-17
Take your game design skills to the next level by creating and animating your own character sprites, objects and backgrounds. Start with a name, develop the character’s personality, signature moves, special powers and a storyline. Finish with a fully animated character to be used in your very own game. Students do not need any prior experience in game design, animation, or sketching. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for $15 conversion fee.

Minecraft© Modders | $110 | June 10 – 13 | Ages 8-10 & 11-17
Use your favorite game to learn the basics of modding and foundations of programming. Learn scripting and logic statements as you create your first mods! Introductory coding will also be taught through a simulated environment inspired by Minecraft. Student projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students must own a Java version of Minecraft to access their projects at home. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible.

Make Your First 3D Video Game! | $110 June 17 – 20 | Ages 8-10 & 11-17
In this Black Rocket classic, you will go well beyond the limitations of the traditional 2D game design classes and create an immersive 3D world. Students will learn the physics behind 3D games, explore beginner event scripting, level design, controlling the flow of gameplay, and storytelling. Student created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.

App Attack! | $110 | June 24 – 27 | Ages 8-10 & 11-17
Take the first steps into the world of mobile app design and customize your own game app! Using a specialized app & game development tool, students will explore the world of web-based (HTML5) mobile apps. In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of App publishing functions. Student-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer. Publishing to App Stores not included. Students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class.

Code Breakers | $110 | July 8 – 11 | Ages 8-10 & 11-17
Calling all future coders, programmers & designers! Learn the basics of coding languages like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS through a series of web projects and design challenges each day and be on your way to becoming the next tech star! Whether you want to be a silicon valley CEO or the high school student who just made $1 million dollars for programming in her bedroom, this course has the essentials you need to begin your journey. Projects will be available on a Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.

Minecraft© Designers | $110 | July 15 – 18 | Ages 8-10 & 11-17
If you love the game Minecraft©, and always wanted to design your own world, this class is for you! Learn how to create a custom map, the basics of creating 3D models using a new software to design your very own objects, how to build with Redstone and Command blocks, and create custom textures for you to import at home or share with friends. Students must own a Java version of Minecraft to access their projects at home. Tablet, phone, and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible. Parent email address is required to use 3D modeling software.

Virtual Reality: The Future is Now | $110 | July 22 – 25 | Ages 8-10 & 11-17
Embark on an epic adventure in virtual reality! In this cutting-edge class, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments and crafting memorable 3D experiences. At the end of the week, take home your first cardboard VR headset to show friends and family the new worlds you created. VR projects can be viewed on a website or a mobile device. Students do not need a mobile device to take the class, but to use the VR headset a camper will need access to an Android or Apple mobile device. VR projects will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.

ROBLOX® Coders & Entrepreneurs! | $110 | July 29 – August 1 |Ages 8-10 & 11-17
Discover how to code in the Lua language while playing and designing worlds in ROBLOX®, an online universe where you can create anything you dream of. This class combines game design concepts, coding, and fun! Young entrepreneurs will also learn how to navigate ROBLOX’s fast-growing marketplace to publish their games. Student-created games will be available on a password protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.

Dozer* | $130 $30 | June 3 – 6 or June 10 – 13 or June 17 – 20 | Ages 8-17
Learn about safety and heavy equipment operation on industry approved simulators. Topics covered during this camp include workplace safety, developing good workplace habits, shooting grades in construction, and more.

Film & Theatre | $110 | June 17 – 20, 24-25 | Ages 13-18
The camp is designed to take students through the process of creating a short film and learning the fundamentals of Screenwriting, acting, design and production. The camp ends with the world premiere of the short film with a live theatre performance. Film & Theatre is taught by two faculty members from the Angelina College School of Arts and Education. Camp lasts six days ( Monday – Thursday, June 17-20 and Monday-Tuesday, June 24-25). The live performance will be Tuesday, June 25 at 7 p.m. in the ACA Black Box Theater.

Hunter Safety* | $125 $5 | June 26 or July 10 | Ages 9 and up
Learn safe hunting practices at the one-day camp. The program is developed to meet the standards for Hunting Safety Education established by Texas. Campers will take the Hunter Education Certificate exam during this course.

Shooting Skills* | $130 $30 | June 10 – 13 or July 08 – 11 | Ages 8-17
Learn weapon safety, new shooting skills and improve old skills in a safe environment. Shooting Skills is taught by an Angelina College Police Academy instructor.

Safe Sitter/CPR + First Aid* | $150 $50 | June 24 – 27 or July 22 – 25 | Ages 8-10 & 11-17
Learn how to be a safe babysitter. In a fun, interactive environment, students will learn the skills needed to respond appropriately to medical emergencies. Students will also learn beginning employment skills to work as a babysitter and how to provide educational learning activities while babysitting. At the completion of this camp, students will earn both Safe Sitter and CPR + First Aid Certifications! Camp time is 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. (ages 8-10) or 1 – 5 p.m. (ages 11-17). This camp can only be taken one time per year.

Sports Camps:

Athletic camps are offered throughout the year. Campers will be provided with the tools to improve skills, leadership and confidence through innovative drills, lectures and games. The camps focus on fundamentals, promote good sportsmanship, emphasize positive attitudes, create opportunities to work as a team, and encourage campers to always give 100%.

The knowledgeable Roadrunner Athletics coaching staff and players instruct the camps and are eager to help each camper develop skills and have fun!
