POSITION: Counselor (Academic Advisor)

EMPLOYMENT DATE: Summer 2011

QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in guidance and counseling, education, student personnel services, social work, or related area. Must have three years work experience in academic/career counseling or teaching at the secondary or post-secondary level. Preference will be given to community college experience. The qualified applicant must possess the ability to interact with a diverse student population. Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills are required. Willingness to develop skill in conversational Spanish during the first two years of employment.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

1. Counseling (Academic Advising)

• Assist students with academic advising, degree planning and schedule building;
• Identify student needs and make referrals to appropriate community agencies;
• Assist students with career counseling;
• Assist with advising and orientation-related duties at off-campus teaching centers; and
• Assist with advising and registration for all concurrent (high school) students.

2. Maintenance of college and university transfer guides

• Annual correspondence with colleges and universities where AC students are most likely to transfer to for the purpose of updating course equivalency guides.

3. Other duties

• Assist with the team teaching of the college’s study skills courses;
• Coordinate advisement training;
• Assist with campus tours; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

CONTRACT & SALARY: Twelve months contract. Assignment requires 40 hrs/week and some evening duty. Salary range $40,000-$42,000, commensurate with education and experience. Proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States must be verified for successful candidate.
