AC SINGERS KICKING OFF NEW SEASON WITH FOREST FESTIVAL PERFORMANCE

DISCO LIKE THIS – Angelina College sophomore and AC Singer performer Erin Nelson gets down and funky to the 70s disco classic “Freak Out” during a 2006 show. The AC Singers will open the 2007 season with a 2 p.m. Sunday performance at the East Texas Forest Festival. As the AC Singers prepare for their Sunday performance at the Forest Festival, they do so while mixing a little old with the new.

The 2007-2008 line-up of Angelina College students will feature several established sophomore performers to carry on some of the AC Singers traditional routines, and a bevy of incoming freshmen with talent unique enough to add new material.

“We have a good variety of talent, a good talent pool filled with diversity,” AC Singer director Beckie Compton said. “We have students from all around the area, and several of them bring some special individual talents we hope to highlight throughout the year.”

This year’s group of AC Singers includes sophomores Dominique Douglas (Lufkin), Erin Nelson (Buffalo), Adam Scott (Lufkin) and Sarah Jackson (Hudson). Freshmen members are Erica Rains (Huntington), Jeremy Powell (Diboll), Josh Griffin (Huntington), Hallie Collier (Huntington), Esther McClure (Nacogdoches), Mandy Smith (Diboll) and Courtney Gaither. Bryan Harkness of Lufkin will again provide the sound for the group.

Along with the traditional Broadway, tap, clogging, disco and country/western numbers for which the AC Singers are known, the group hopes to include several solo numbers: Erica Rains, former captain of the Huntington drill team, is working on a dance solo. Harkness (guitar) and Griffin (trumpet) are expected to perform instrumental work. Gaither, with her theater background, is working to develop stage routines.

“We’ll always perform certain numbers handed down through the years,” Compton said. “That’s where our sophomores come into play, with their experience of our traditions.

“But I have to say I’m extremely excited about our new performers and their abilities. They’ll definitely help keep the ‘variety’ in our variety shows.”
