11/27/2006 - AC Women Win Third Straight
In their first game following their huge upset of
national powerhouse Trinity Valley, the Angelina College Lady
Roadrunners took no chances with the possibility of a letdown, racing
out to a 30-point by midway through the second half to knock off
Southwest Christian College 96-61 Monday at Shands Gym.
Averaging 15 steals per game over their previous contests, the Lady
‘Runners (6-3, 1-0) finished with 22 steals against the Lady Rams –
AC’s third game with more than 20 thefts. In all, the Lady Roadrunners
forced 38 SWCC turnovers in picking up their third straight win.
Camille Parks led five AC players into double figures, hitting for 18
points that included a trio of three-pointers in five tries. Jamelle
Clark added 14 points and six rebounds; Janique Garrett added 12
points, three assists and four steals; and Ty Felder and Sha’Tonya
Mays added 11 points each.
SWCC’s Brittany Turner led the Lady Rams with 22 points and seven
rebounds.
What had been a tight game in the first half erupted into a Lady
‘Runner track meet fed by more defensive pressure: Leading 22-20 with
8:22 remaining before the break, AC reeled off an 11-2 run fueled by
three steals from Parks and Cassandra Johnson. Those buckets were part
of 16 AC points off turnovers and gave the Lady Roadrunners a 40-31
cushion at halftime.
The relentless effort on the defensive end of the floor never waned in
the second half, with AC using seven Lady Ram turnovers in the first
four minutes to open the half with a 15-4 run, eventually building the
lead to 55-35. That 20-point lead would grow to 30 by the eight-minute
mark, allowing the Lady Roadrunners to coast to their sixth win of the
season.
AC will host San Jacinto Saturday in the last game before the
Christmas break. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Shands Gym in Lufkin.
