AILEY II PROGRAM TO INCLUDE WORLD-FAMOUS “REVELATIONS”

Alliance is excited to present New York’s Ailey II modern dance company
on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Temple Theater on the Angelina
College campus. Tickets prices are $27-$35, and are available at the
Temple Theater box office (936-633-5454). AC student rush tickets are
available for only $10, for students who come to the box office 30
minutes prior to the performance. Box office hours are weekdays noon to
5:30 pm. Season sponsors are First Bank & Trust/East Texas and
Temple-Inland.
Ailey II’s repertory includes a diverse array of amazing ballets created
by current emerging choreographers, dance legends, and Alvin Ailey
himself. Perhaps the most famous piece of Ailey’s career, "Revelations,"
will be represented by the young Ailey II company. Extended excerpts of
this world-renowned ballet, which uses African-American religious music
to fervently explore the places of deepest grief and holiest joy, will
be performed for the Lufkin audience.
In his autobiography, Alvin Ailey says of Revelations, “The whole ballet
was a gigantic suite of spirituals. I poured in just about everything,
every beautiful spiritual I had ever heard. The critics and audiences
had nothing but the most delicious praise from the beginning.”
During past tours, critics have raved that Ailey II consistently
astonishes audiences with its unique artistry, strength, and passion.
“There is apparently not much, as far as dance technique goes, that the
youthful members of Ailey II cannot do,” said The New York Times. The
New York Sun describes Ailey II as “a polished, accomplished touring
company that plays a key role in Ailey’s mission of bringing popular
dance to the widest possible audience.”
