1/6/2007 - AC Lady ‘Runners Fall to Tyler: Tyler 79, AC 64
Tyler’s Lady Apaches used their unique combination of
size, speed and shooting ability to take down the Angelina College
Lady Roadrunners Saturday.
TJC’s Jamia Malone led all scorers with 24 points; teammates Kristin
Moore and Yoshica Spears added 13 points each.
The Lady ‘Runners were led by Camille Parks’ 19, followed by Cassandra
Johnson with 17. They were the only AC players with double figures on
a day when the Lady Roadrunners shot a frigid 22-for-78 (28 percent)
from the floor, including a 7-of-35 effort in the first half that led
to a 47-20 halftime deficit.
However, AC fought their way back late in the second half, drawing to
within 10 points with just over a minute to play behind more intense
defensive pressure that forced several Tyler turnovers. Unfortunately,
the Lady Roadrunners couldn’t convert the points, allowing the Lady
Apaches to escape with their fourth conference win.
“We had some shots tonight, we just couldn’t put them in,” AC head
coach Byron Coleman said. “We had players doing a great job getting to
the hole, but we just couldn’t convert enough shots to win the game.
“Our goal tonight was to get a better start in the first half; those
slow starts have been hurting us all season. But it just didn’t happen
for us.”
Tyler opened the game with a quick 21-9 surge fueled by three treys
from Malone. AC, on the other hand, opened the game by misfiring on 11
of their first 14 attempts. Tyler led at the half 47-20.
The Lady Apaches would extend that lead to 30 in the second half
before the Lady Roadrunner defense caught fire. AC’s Morgan Freeman
converted a fast-break feed from Avery Bess with 1:01 to play to cut
the Tyler lead to 74-64. But Tyler shooters hit five of their last six
free throws to close out the win.
The Lady Roadrunners will play in Jacksonville on Wednesday, with game
time set for 5:30 p.m.
