1/18/2007 - Lady Roadrunners Fall to Blinn, 75-61

After clawing their way back from an 18-point deficit and moving to within four points of Blinn’s Lady Buccaneers with nearly 11 minutes left to play, it appeared as though AC’s Lady Roadrunners were poised for another miracle finish.

But the Lady Bucs regained their earlier shooting stroke and the Lady ‘Runner rally fizzled, leaving AC on the wrong end of a 75-61 final Thursday in Brenham.

Lady Buc Ursula Hill lit up the scoreboard with 21 points, thanks to six three-pointers that included four in the first half. Britney Minor added 12 points, and Amaka Uzomah added 11 rebounds for Blinn.

The Lady Roadrunners got 10 points each from Desiree Waller and Cassandra Johnson, but the overall shooting effort suffered from a slow start. AC opened the game hitting just six of their first 18 shot attempts to fall behind 27-12; the Lady Roadrunners finished the game hitting just 25 of 70 field goal attempts and three of 15 from long range. To add insult to injury, the Lady ‘Runners managed to hit just eight of 17 free throws.

Blinn sent an early message that the night would consist of a long-range bombing attack, with Lady Buc Edricka Thomas opening the scoring with a long three within the first 70 seconds. Hill followed that with a pair of treys of her own, and with the Lady Bucs moving around the usually sticky AC defense, Blinn was on its way to an 18-point lead at 30-12. They would lead 42-27 lead at the half, with Hill tallying 11 points by then.

But as has been the case all season, the Lady Roadrunners used an intensified defensive effort and solid board work to climb back into the game. A 15-2 AC run came courtesy of a pair of Carissa Wyble rebounds and putbacks, followed by buckets from Parks, Morgan Petite and Ty Felder. AC held Blinn to a pair of free throws during that seven-minute span.

Then the Lady Bucs found their touch, with Hill nailing a pair of threes as part of an 8-2 run that killed the Lady Roadrunner rally.

AC, now 4-2 in conference play, will host Lon Morris Saturday at 2 p.m.
