2/21/2007 - Ladyrunners 64, Blinn 56

The Lady Roadrunners (17-9, 10-5) put on an incredible display of team defense Saturday, holding Blinn to just four points in the game’s first ten minutes.

As it turned out, those minutes proved crucial in the late going.

After falling behind 23-4 by the 9:51 mark of the first half, the Lady Bucs managed to take their first lead of the game at 36-35 with 12:46 remaining in the game. Worse for AC, two key players ended up on the training table with injuries and two more sat on the bench with foul trouble.

“I was thinking we were running out of players real fast,” AC coach Byron Coleman said. “I wasn’t worried, just because the girls kept their composure. Even when Blinn hit some big shots, we didn’t panic.”

The Lady Bucs’ big shots turned a laugher into a nail-biter, with the Lady Roadrunners missing shots and losing players as the game inched toward the finale.

But a Ty Felder putback launched a 12-3 run that featured three-pointers from Sha’Tonya Mays, Desiree Waller and Avery Bess. AC would nail nine treys in the game, with Waller hitting five of those to lead the Lady ‘Runners in scoring with 21 points. Felder added 11 points, 11 rebounds and four steals; and Camille Parks chipped in with 9 points and three assists.

Coleman insisted that he wasn’t breathing easy despite the Lady ‘Runners’ early success.

“It’s never that easy,” Coleman said. “But before the game, we talked about making sure we kept out girl in front of us to contain them defensively. That was our main objective for this game.

“We lost our intensity there for a few minutes, and Ty picked up her third foul around the same time. That hurt us as a team, and it took us a while to recover.”

AC’s record now stands at 17-9, 10-5 with three games to play. The Lady ‘Runners will travel to Lon Morris on Wednesday as part of a men/women doubleheader.
