After the Ladyrunners opened the game with a 13-5 run
– holding Jacksonville without a field goal over the first 12 minutes
– AC fell behind late in the second half. But a spark from Shanquita
Howard ignited a 16-0 run to push the Lady Roadrunners to the 58-54
win over the Lady Jags Saturday at Shands Gym.
With AC trailing by nine at the 10:00 mark of the second half, Howard
got things rolling with a long three-pointer and followed that shot
with an offensive putback, a block and a pair of defensive rebounds.
And with eight minutes to play, Desiree Waller took Ty Felder’s feed
and knocked down a three of her own to allow AC to regain the lead for
good.
Howard finished with seven points, eight rebounds, a block and an
assist. Desiree Waller led the scoring attack with 16 points, and
Camille Parks added 13. Felder missed a double-double by a bucket and
a board, finishing with eight points and nine rebounds.
Jacksonville (9-15, 0-13) had an opportunity to tie the score with
fifteen seconds remaining, but a wide-open lay-up on a fast break
rolled off the rim to keep the Lady Jags winless in Region XIV play.
Shundrae Faulk led Jacksonville with 14 points, and Theodora Pandeli
added eight points and 12 rebounds.
AC coach Byron Coleman said Howard’s power surge was the key to the
home win.
“Shanquita’s the kind of player who gives you a little of everything:
offense, rebounds, blocks and some pretty good defense,” Coleman said.
“She hit that big three-pointer, and that’s an area that’s been giving
her trouble the past few weeks. And her ability to block shots the
past two games has been game-changers for us.”
The Lady Roadrunners, now 15-9, 8-5 on the season, will travel to
Kilgore Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. start.
