1/20/2007 - Lady Roadrunners 79, Lon Morris 71
The Lon Morris Lady Bearcats had to have thought that
by holding Angelina College Lady Roadrunner leading scorers Desiree
Waller and Camille Parks relatively in check, they’d have a decent
chance at a road victory.
But the Lady ‘Cats failed to account for the rest of the Lady ‘Runner
roster.
Every Lady Roadrunner scored in AC’s 79-71 win over Lon Morris, with
Waller leading the way with 13 points. Parks added 11 and Jamelle
Parks 10 to round out those with double figures, but the offensive
story was the Lady ‘Runners’ balanced attack that involved every
player. The Lady ‘Runners finished with 37 points off the bench.
AC (11-6, 5-2) needed all of it to overcome monster efforts from Lady
‘Cats Kendrea Walker (17 points, 17 rebounds) and Ashley Norris (16
points, 10 rebounds). Marisa Stein added 11 points and three assists.
“Everybody’s played in every game this season, so it’s up to the kids
to produce whenever they get an opportunity to get on the court,”
coach Byron Coleman said. “They did that tonight. You have to give
them credit for being ready to play when their time came.”
Hitting the floor already shifted into high gear, AC raced out to a
12-point lead with just over three minutes remaining in the half.
Parks, Shanquita Howard and Morgan Petite were part of a 7-0 run over
those final moments to leave the Lady ‘Runners with a 42-35 lead at
the half.
That margin would grow to as many as 21 points in the opening minutes
of the second half, with AC speeding out to a 16-4 run and a 60-39
lead with 16:07 to play. The Lady ‘Cats would trim that lead to a
dangerously close eight points with more than a minute to play, but
Howard pulled down a pair of defensive rebounds late to give AC its
fifth conference win.
During half time ceremonies, Angelina College honored Brandon
Elementary fifth grader Holly Tubbs as the AC/Triple AAA Student of
the Week.
The Lady Roadrunners host Panola’s Fillies Wednesday night as part of
an AC doubleheader.
