2/3/2007 - AC Lady Roadrunners vs Southern-Shreveport Lady Jaguars

Yes, it was a non-conference affair, but the Angelina College Lady Roadrunners needed a win nevertheless, just to get back on track after a two-game conference losing streak.

AC righted itself with a convincing 72-61 win over Southern-Shreveport, getting a huge night from Ty Felder in the process. Felder finished with yet another double-double, scoring 14 points and collecting 14 rebounds to go with five assists, two blocks and three steals.

Desiree Waller added 12 points, and Avery Bess and Jamelle Clark chipped in with 11 points each. Bess’ points came during a personal first-half scoring spree in which she nailed three three-points to help push the Lady ‘Runners to a 12-point lead before the half.

Southern’s Brittany Dukes led the Lady Jags with 13 points; Joyonna Willis added 12.

One key stat: The Lady Roadrunners dominated the glass to the tune of a 54-38 rebounding edge. With 22 of those boards of the offensive variety, AC managed to post 15 second-chance points as opposed to just four for the Lady Jags.

With the Lady ‘Runners leading by double digits throughout most of the contest, Southern managed to pull to within six points at the 12:37 mark. But Clark scored in the paint on three straight possessions – Felder assisted on two of those buckets – and Waller caught fire over the last five minutes to lead AC to its 13th win of the season against just eight losses.

The Lady Roadrunners will pick up the conference portion of their schedule with a Wednesday road trip to San Jacinto. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.

Before Saturday’s game, Angelina College recognized Garrett Primary student Angeli Sandoval as the AC/Triple AAA Student of the Week.

Angelina College guard Desiree Waller was selected as the Region XIV Conference Player of the Week this past week. The Thibodaux, La. native averaged 24 points for the Lady ‘Runners with a 30-point game and an 18-point effort, and leads AC with a 13.2 ppg average. She is also among league leaders in three-point percentage at 37.3 percent.
