2/5/2008 - AC to Retire Buchholz Jersey
Red Sox Pitcher On-Hand for Ceremony Scheduled for Tonight
After tonight, there will be no-no No. 11 on the Angelina College
Roadrunner baseball team.
Former Roadrunner and current Boston Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz,
who stunned the baseball world this past fall by throwing a no hitter
in just his second major-league start, will be on hand to this evening
to have his No. 11 – the number he wore for AC for two full seasons –
retired in a ceremony scheduled to take place in Shands Gym during
half time of the men’s basketball game against Panola.
On Sept. 1, 2007, at Fenway Park, Buchholz spun nine innings of zeros
against the Baltimore Orioles, becoming the second quickest pitcher to
notch a no-no in major league history – and the first Red Sox rookie
to ever accomplish the feat. According to the Elias Sports Bureau,
Buchholz was just the third pitcher since 1900 to pitch a no hitter in
his first or second major-league start.
But before ever toeing the rubber for Red Sox Nation, Buchholz made
his mark – several lasting ones, in fact – as an Angelina College
Roadrunner during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Drafted by the Red Sox in
the 2005 supplemental round, Buchholz left Roadrunner Field as the
career record holder in single-season ERA (1.05) and strikeouts (129),
both of those records occurring during the 2005 season. He averaged a
phenomenal 13.5 Ks per inning that year.
In addition, Buchholz hit .362 with six homers, 24 RBIs and 10 stolen
bases as a sophomore.
Buchholz finished the 2007 season having appeared in three games for
the Red Sox; his final stat line included 12 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA
since his Sept. 1st call up to the big club.
The men’s basketball game against Panola will start at 7:30 p.m.
