2/25/2008 - AC Baseball Sweeps Cedar Valley
Angelina College starting pitchers Frank Corolla and Corey Benevides
got plenty of run support in the Roadrunners’ Monday sweep of Cedar
Valley.
It turns out neither pitcher needed it.
AC pounded the Suns 14-4 and 9-1 behind the power hitting of Chris
Andreas and Jake Rowell; and Corolla and Benevides matched each other
nearly inning-for-inning, with Corolla tossing five innings of shutout
ball in the opener and Benevides duplicating those numbers in the
nightcap.
In Game 1, Andreas was a double shy of the cycle, driving in five runs
with a single, a three-run triple and a solo bomb that cleared the
roof of AC’s Activity Center behind the right-field wall. Jake Rowell
also homered, a two-run jack that accounted for both his RBIs.
Corolla blinded the Suns with six strikeouts, allowing just two hits
to collect the win.
In the nightcap, Benevides was just as dominant, allowing no runs on
just two hits and striking out seven. He got bat backup from Austin
Lasprilla (1-2, two walks, two stolen bases and three runs scored) and
Mark Serna, who scored twice and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
Trey Rackel and Chase Hernandez each pitched an inning of relieve,
with Rackel giving up a single and no runs; and Hernandez allowing one
run on two hits.
The Roadrunners, now 9-7-1 on the season, will take part in this
weekend’s Bossier Parish Tournament in Shreveport. Friday’s game times
are 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
