COKIE ROBERTS SPEAKS AT AC NOV. 6

Cokie Roberts, one of America’s most recognizable news analysts, will appear as part of Lufkin’s second annual Distinguished Speaker Series on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Sponsored by Lufkin Industries, Inc., and the Pineywoods Foundation of Lufkin, Roberts’ presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Temple Theater. Co-sponsors of the series are Angelina Arts Alliance and Angelina College.

“Having a news commentator like Cokie Roberts speak in Lufkin is a rare opportunity, and Lufkin Industries and the Pineywoods Foundation are pleased to make this opportunity available to the public for a nominal cost,” said Jay Glick, president of Lufkin Industries, Inc., and John Anderson, chairman of the Pineywoods Foundation.

Roberts will discuss politics and politicians, as she presents “An Insider’s View of Washington, D.C.” Tickets to the Nov. 6 event may be purchased for $10 at the Temple Theater Box Office or by calling 936-633-5454. Student/senior tickets are $5. All seats are reserved.

Cokie Roberts is a longtime political analyst for ABC News and a senior news analyst for National Public Radio. She co-anchored “This Week,” an ABC interview program, with Sam Donaldson from 1996 to 2002. She lives in Washington, where she has covered Congress, politics, and policy for ABC News for 15 years. During her 30 years in broadcasting, Roberts has won two Emmys for her work and has been inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame. She was cited by American Women in Radio and Television as one of the 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting.

Roberts is also a best-selling author. She and her husband, Steve, write a syndicated newspaper column distributed by United Media. Together, they wrote the book “This Day Forward,” an account of their 35-year marriage and other marriages in U.S. history, which appeared on the New York Times’ best seller list. Roberts also wrote, “We Are Our Mothers’ Daughters,” an account of women’s roles and relationships throughout U.S. history, and “Founding Mothers,” which explores the wives, daughters, philosophers, and others who influenced the men behind the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. “Founding Mothers” was in the top 10 on both the New York Times and Amazon bestseller lists.

Copies of “Founding Mothers” will be on sale in the Temple Theater lobby. Following her program, Roberts will be available to sign copies of the book.

Roberts also serves on the boards of several non-profit institutions and this year was appointed to the newly-formed President’s Commission on Service and Civic Participation.
