LUFKIN COMMUNITY BAND MAKES AROUND-THE-WORLD JOURNEY
WITH SPRING CONCERT

The Lufkin Community Band would like to take you on a musical tour around the world later this month.

A staple of East Texas for more than a century, the LCB, joined by the Angelina College Band, will host a spring concert titled “Around the World in 90 Minutes” on Sunday, April 27 at the Temple Theater on the campus of Angelina College.

Featuring numbers from ancient Persia, France, Italy, the Caribbean and – of course – the United States, the concert will offer such selections as “In a Persian Market” (Albert B. Ketelbey); “Dance of the Comedians” (Bedřich Smetana); “Pirates of the Carribean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” (Klaus Badlet); and “Toccata” (Girolamo Frescobaldi) as well as “The Star Spangled Banner” by Francis Scott Key.

Directed by David Smith, the Lufkin Community Band is a 40-piece concert band comprised of local musicians varying in scope of experience from student to trained professionals, with an age range of 18 to 80 years old. Some are housewives, students, business professionals, doctors, teachers, local public school band directors and retirees from public school teaching, retirees of other businesses and trades including college and university teaching, and a few high school students recommended by their respective High School Band Directors

Smith says the Spring show – the season’s finale – is intended not only to show his musicians’ pure love of music, but also to strike a musical chord within all those in attendance.

“Our goal is to have our audience leaving the concert singing or whistling a favorite tune,” Smith said. “Our musicians gather together to make music because we love music and love making music together. We enjoy expressing that love with what promises to be a very good performance for the listening public.”

Smith founded the current version of the Lufkin Community Band in 2001, following the history and tradition of community bands that dates back throughout American history. Smith says the band’s goal is to “permanently keep alive the great American tradition of performing ‘America’s Favorite Music.’”

Following the concert, refreshments will be served, and concert goers will have the opportunity to meet and visit with Mr. Smith and the musicians while at the same time take in the AC student art exhibit that will be offered in the adjoining Art Gallery.

Tickets are available at the Angelina Center for the Arts Box Office at Temple Theater from noon to 6:00 pm Monday through Friday and are priced at $4 for adults and $3 for seniors, children and students.

For more information, contact the Box Office at (936) 633-5454.
