ANGELINA COLLEGE BANDS RETURN WITH JAZZ, BIG BAND
SOUNDS
In a show that has become a local music fan favorite – virtually every
concert guarantees a packed house each time – the Angelina College
Swinging Roadrunner Jazz Band and the ACC Big Band will again unite on
the stage of AC’s Hudgins Hall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15th for
their annual fall concert.
With director Larry Greer leading the program, the bands will swing
through sessions that include both contemporary jazz tunes – such as
John Coltrane’s “Mr. PC”, and Fats Waller’s “Ain’t Misbehavin’” – and
big band standards such as “C Jam Blues” and “In a Mellow Tone” by Duke
Ellington.
Greer, a music instructor for AC’s Fine Arts Division, assembles his
unique blend of college musicians as each semester progresses, measuring
their talents to see just where they fit into the Swinging Roadrunner
band. He then showcases those talents in fall and spring concerts. This
year’s Swinging Roadrunner lineup includes Ryan Stovall (alto
saxophone), Ryan Haden (tenor/soprano sax), Jeremy Simon (trombone),
Steven Nash (trombone), Steven Rushing (bass), Addison Weaver (drum
set/auxiliary percussion) and Ian Tishberg on guitar. Greer will
accompany the band on piano.
On the other hand, the ACC Big Band fills its chairs with both local and
student musicians. A 15-piece orchestra, the band is comprised of
retired professional musicians, band directors, professionals from other
fields and former students playing swing era tunes from the golden years
of American music.
Tickets for the show are $4 for adults, and $3 for Senior citizens,
students and children.
