JOURNALISM PROGRAM REAPS REWARDS
The Journalism program at Angelina College recently
received the most recognition in its history from the Texas Community
College Journalism Association.
The Pacer newspaper and The AC View magazine, both student publications,
brought home a total of 14 awards at the TCCJA Convention held on October
12. The TCCJA membership is made of 20 community colleges across the state
of Texas; thirteen schools were represented at the convention hosted by
Texas State University in San Marcos.
The Pacer competed with smaller community colleges in Division II. First
place winners were Betsy Dupuis for sports action photo, and C.J. McDaniel
and Amy Holzworth for picture page or panel. Honorable Mention awards went
to Elaine Beasley for sports action photo, Georgianne Redding for feature
photo and Betsy Dupuis for news photo. The Pacer staff also won second
place for headline writing.
The AC View competed with all community colleges regardless of size. A
first place award went to Audrey McGlothlin for cover design; she also
received a second place for photography. Third place awards went to Carrie
Garms for journalism story and Georgianne Redding for layout and design.
Redding also won an honorable mention for layout and design, along with
Anthony Spagnolo for journalism story and Audrey McGlothlin for
photography. The AC View won second place for overall general excellence.
Libby Stapleton, coordinator of student publications said, “I am very
proud of our student publications staff members for all of the awards,
especially the three first-place awards. That is the most first-place
awards received by us in any one contest.”
Following this convention, Stapleton assumed the office of president of
TCCJA for 2007-2009.
Garms, opinions editor of The Pacer staff, attended the conference and
participated in the photo portion of the on-site contests. A mock press
conference was staged, complete with a local politician, protestors, local
police and plenty of action.
A total of sixty-eight students took photos and reported on the event for
the competition. Awards were presented Friday evening during the awards
banquet.
Two speakers from the Austin American-Statesman held sessions in the
afternoon about covering news on the World Wide Web and common errors made
by young reporters.
Del Mar College, located in Corpus Christi, will host the 2008 convention
on Oct. 3.
The Pacer is published six times per semester, and The AC View is
published once in the spring under the supervision of Stapleton and Jan
Anderson-Paxson, photography adviser.
