2/4/2008 - 'Runners Swept by Alvin
The Angelina College Roadrunner baseball team hosted an unexpected
doubleheader Monday, playing the two games originally scheduled for
Alvin this past Sunday.
The ‘Runners may have wished they hadn’t played those games at all.
AC suffered its first sweep of the season, falling 8-5 in the opener
and 9-6 in the nightcap to drop their record to 2-5-1.
The opportunistic Dolphins took advantage of every ‘Runner mistake,
whether it came through pitching or defense. After scoring three
unearned runs and holding off a late ‘Runner rally to win Game 1,
Alvin picked up a few more cheap runs in Game 2.
AC’s Matt Thielepape wielded the big stick for the Roadrunners all
day, but his efforts alone weren’t enough to hold off the Dolphins.
The Round Rock sophomore went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs in
the first game, then drove in two more runs with a two-run homer in
the fifth inning of the second. Keith Prestridge also homered for the
‘Runners, a solo job in the early game.
Alvin’s Josh Darnell finished with three RBIs in Game 2, blasting a
two-run shot in the fifth and driving in another run with a sac fly in
the sixth. Richard Porfirio added a two-run triple and Giovanni Angel
an RBI double for the Dolphins in the day’s finale.
AC’s Jason Gurka took the loss in Game 1, while Chase Hernandez drew
the “L” in Game 2 after giving up four runs in his one inning of
relief.
In the nightcap, AC scored first on Emmons’ double to score Keith
Prestridge. After Alvin tied it at 1-1 in the top of the second, the
Roadrunners got another run on a Ryan Mallett walk and a Paul Prestera
RBI single to take a 2-1 lead.
But two errors and a passed ball in the third led to two more unearned
Dolphin runs. Although AC tied the game at 5-5 with a three-run fifth
– two of those runs coming off Thielepape’s blast – Alvin was able to
hang four runs on the board in the sixth on three hits, two walks and
a hit batsman to finish the sweep with the 9-6 win.
AC (2-5-1) will host McLennan on Wednesday, with a doubleheader
scheduled for a noon starting time.
