2/6/2008 - AC Baseball Splits with McLennan
A pretty day for baseball got even prettier with Frank Corolla on the
mound.
The Roadrunner sophomore pitched a complete-game beauty in the opener
of Wednesday’s doubleheader with McLennan, leading Angelina College to
a 6-1 win at Roadrunner Field.
Corolla’s seven innings included no earned runs, eight strikeouts and
just one walk while scattering four harmless Highlander hits.
Matt Thielepape went 4-for-4 with an RBI, and Bobby Armstrong drove in
a pair of runs with a two-run single in the third to back Corolla.
AC dropped the night cap 7-3. Tim Emmons finished that game with a
triple, and Chris Andreas added a pinch-hit double for the ‘Runners.
Trey Rackel took the mound loss.
The hardest ball hit off Corolla all day came in McLennan’s second
at-bat, with Paul McCoy ripping a double to right center. After a
‘Runner throwing error, James Hipp squeezed in McCoy for McLennan’s
only run of the day.
AC’s first runs came in the bottom of the third, with Mark Serna
taking a ball between the shoulder blades and Thielepape beating out
an infield single. Tim Emmons walked, and Chris Andreas grounded to
second; but a bad relay throw allowed two runs to score. Armstrong
followed that up with a single to left, and AC led 4-1 after three.
The ‘Runners gave Corolla the final runs he’d need in the fourth, with
Mike Padgett leading off with a double, Austin Lasprilla beating out
an infield single and Thielepape driving in Padgett with a single.
Lasprilla stole home while Thielepape held up the infield in a
rundown, and AC led 6-1.
That was more than enough for Corolla, who retired nine of the last 13
batters he faced.
AC (3-5-1) will travel to Brenham for the Blinn Tournament beginning
on Friday and running through Sunday.
