4/11/2008 - Waller Named Second-Team All-American
Look
among the final statistics for Region XIV Women’s basketball, and it
won’t be hard to find the name of Desiree Waller.
She made her way into nearly every category.
Now, the Angelina College and Thibodeaux, La. sophomore can also add her
name to an even more prestigious list: That of a Second-Team Junior
College All-American.
Having already secured All-Region and All-Conference honors, Waller
became the only Region XIV women’s player to make the All-American list.
A 5’5” guard once considered too small for serious consideration at the
collegiate level, Waller finished second in the conference in scoring
(16.7 ppg), fifth in three-point percentage (36.7 percent), second in
free-throw percentage (80.9 percent) and second in steals (2.5 per
game). All that while playing with a nagging thumb injury that plagued
her the second half of the season – and perhaps kept her
already-impressive numbers down somewhat.
“Desiree is a very special player, but she’s an even more special kid,”
AC head coach Byron Coleman said. “It’s been a real pleasure to coach
her and get to know her these past two years, and our program will
definitely miss her.”
Currently, Waller is entertaining offers from several Division I
programs, but has yet to make a commitment.
