11/28/2011 - Roadrunners Dropped by No. 9 Midland
Guy Davis Thanksgiving Classic Continues Saturday

Going head-to-head against the No. 9 team in the nation, the Angelina College Roadrunners got a taste of what a tough defensive team can do to the best of players.

The ninth-ranked Midland Chaparrals’ defenders harassed the Roadrunners on every possession, holding AC to just two field goals over the first 10 minutes of the second half to take a 76-60 win Friday night at Shands Gymnasium in the opening day of the Guy Davis Thanksgiving Classic.

Mike Myers led the Roadrunners with 18 points and seven rebounds despite missing a large chunk of minutes with foul troubles. Frank Snow finished with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds; and Jaylen Daniel also added 10 points for the ‘Runners.

Midland’s Tre Bowman led the Chaps with 17 points, while Kelvin Agee dropped 15 points in the win.

The scoring wasn’t the story. Rather, it was the way the Chaps were able to smother AC shooters to the tune of a 34 percent shooting night. The Roadrunners had been hitting over 50 percent of their field goals on the season prior to Friday’s game. In fact, AC kept pace in the first half behind Daniel’s 10 points: The ‘Runners trailed 33-28 at the break.

Midland’s experience – the team fielded five sophomores to AC’s one – showed up in the second half with a lock-down defensive scheme. The Roadrunners played well on the defensive end, forcing a total of 17 Chaparral turnovers, but were unable to convert those into points in suffering just their third loss of the season.

AC (8-3) will close out the tournament against Southwestern Christian College Saturday night at 7 p.m.

In the day’s earlier action, the Texas Riders topped Tomball 80-74, Jacksonville held off a furious rally to beat Ranger College 80-78 and Navarro ran past Southwestern Christian by an 81-69 final.

The remainder of Saturday’s scheduled includes the Texas Riders vs. Ranger at 1p.m; Jacksonville vs. Midland at 3 p.m.; and Navarro vs. Tomball at 5 p.m.

Jesse Anderson of Angelina College spins past Midland’s Willis Nicholson (5) during Friday’s game at Shands Gymnasium. The Roadrunners dropped a 76-60 decision to the 9th-ranked Chaparrals in the opening day of the Guy Davis Thanksgiving Classic.
