11/7/2011 - Roadrunners Beat Kingwood College
AC Moves to 2-0 on the Season

Angelina College head basketball coach Todd Neighbors was looking for a test for his young team – a group featuring just one sophomore – and he got exactly that in Saturday night’s game with Kingwood College.

The Roadrunners struggled at times against a Coyote team that employed a different type of zone defense; once AC found the right combinations, the ‘Runners were able to move to 2-0 on the season with an 80-66 win at Shands Gym.

Jaylen Daniel hit a trio of three pointers in the second half on his way to a 17-point night to lead the Roadrunners. Mike Myers finished with 16 points, 18 rebounds and three steals; and Jesse Anderson added 13 points that included a 3-of-7 effort from three-point range.

AC also got a quick spark off the bench from Jamie Farrie, whose 10 points all came within a less-than-two minute span in the first half. Victor Mbachu, also with 10 points, converted six of seven free-throw attempts. Frank Snow added eight points and 13 rebounds for the Roadrunners.

Kingwood’s Brandon Hamalton led the Coyotes with 16 points, followed by Phelix Davis with 15 and Dewayne Wade with 12 points.

“I have to give a lot of credit to Kingwood,” AC head coach Todd Neighbors said. “They took advantage of our youth by playing a very good zone defense, and it took us a while to make the adjustments on the floor. That, and they played a small lineup, which gave our bigger guys matchup troubles defensively.

“But I like what I saw from our players. They want to learn, and they kept digging until they figured it out.”

The Roadrunners put together a 12-4 first-half run while seemingly taking control early. But the Coyote defensive effort turned the tables into an 11-4 Kingwood run, with the Coyotes taking a three-point, 34-31 lead at the half.

With Neighbors juggling his rotations, the Roadrunners bounced back midway through the second half to take their final lead at 54-53 on Mbachu’s free throws.

In Waco, the Lady Roadrunners moved to 2-1 on the season with a split at the McLennan Classic, beating Temple 74-55 on Friday before losing to McLennan 57-48 on Saturday. Diamond Webb finished with 22 points in the loss and 22 points in the win over Temple. Carlisha Wyatt added 11 points against Temple.

The Roadrunners (1-1) will host the Texas Riders Wednesday night at Shands Gym. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Lady Roadrunners (2-1) will open the Angelina Classic on Thursday night. Those games and times will be announced.
