12/8/2011 - San Jacinto 77, Roadrunners 74

Four times in the second half the Roadrunners battled back from double-digit deficits. When they finally took their first lead at 70-69 with 5:35 to play, the Jaylen Daniels go-ahead bucket capped a remarkable 16-5 run that put the ‘Runners in position to win.

But Jesse Anderson’s pair of three-point attempts with less than five seconds remaining – Frank Snow’s offensive rebound gave Anderson a second chance – both rattled around inside the rim before caroming out, leaving AC three points short in a 77-74 loss to San Jacinto’s Ravens.

Never a fan of moral victories, Roadrunner head coach Todd Neighbors nevertheless couldn’t help but express his pride in his team’s effort against a perennial powerhouse.

“Anyone who didn’t realize how hard these guys fight every single game would know it by watching this game,” Neighbors said. “They never, ever quit, no matter how bad things were going for us earlier.

“We’re supposed to be teaching these young men how to be men, to show them how to get through tough times when you’re down. These guys showed me a lot tonight. They played like men.”

Mike Myers led the way for AC with a monstrous 29-point, 15 rebound night. Unfortunately, the home rims weren’t as kind to the rest of the Roadrunners, with open shots finding everything but the bottom of the net and leading to a frustrating 39 percent-shooting night for the team. Snow finished with nine points and nine rebounds despite missing key minutes due to a bloodied face requiring constant attention. LaDerrien Jackson added eight points and Jaylen Daniel seven – including his high-flying dunk from just inside the free-throw line to help ignite the big scoring run.

San Jacinto’s Brandon Chatman finished with 14 points, but those totals don’t reflect the frustration he inflicted against every Roadrunner rally. It was Chatman who knocked down three treys just in time to rebut AC’s comebacks in the second half. Javaria Jones added 12 points and Teris Bourgeois 10 for the Ravens.

The Roadrunners (8-5, 0-3) will resume action in January.
