Angelina College’s Swinging Roadrunners, ACC Big Band Presenting Spring Concert

Promising to eclipse the sounds and excitement of a spectacular fall concert, Angelina College’s Swinging Roadrunner Jazz Band and the ACC Big Band will again rock the rafters of AC’s Hudgins Hall with a concert scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 25th.

Director Larry Greer leads the program, with his musicians offering selections from contemporary music and jazz standards, as well as big band standards immortalized by legendary performers.

This year’s featured guest will be trombonist Walt Boenig from Las Vegas. His career as a professional trombonist included such road bands as Glenn Miller Orchestra (under four leaders, Buddy DeFranco, Peanuts Hucko, Buddy Morrow and Jimmy Henderson); the Harry James Orchestra; the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra (Leader Lee Castle); and a Tom Jones South Africa tour. Since arriving in Las Vegas in the mid '70's he has performed with the house bands at the many hotels on and off the strip, including the Silver Slipper, Desert Inn, "Lido de Paris" at the Stardust and the musical "Chicago" at Mandalay Bay. The Swinging Roadrunners consist of Ryan Stovall (alto sax) and Addison Weaver (drum set), each of whom was selected by audition for the Texas Community College All-State Jazz Ensemble; Reed Porterfield (tenor sax); Autumn Rutherford (piano); Josh Murray (guitar); and Shaun Dubose (bass).

The ACC Big Band will perform selected charts from the Walt Boenig big band library.

The ACC Big Band fills its chairs with both local and student musicians. A 15-piece orchestra, the band is comprised of retired professional musicians, band directors, professionals from other fields and former students playing swing era tunes from the golden years of American music.

Greer, a music instructor for AC’s Fine Arts Division, assembles his unique blend of college musicians as each semester progresses, measuring their talents to see just where they fit into the Swinging Roadrunner Combo. He then showcases those talents in fall and spring concerts.

Tickets for the show are $4 for adults, and $3 for senior citizens, students and children.
