Angelina College, Sam Houston State University Renew Articulation Agreement

Officials from Angelina College and Sam Houston State University recently renewed an articulation agreement that will benefit students from both institutions.

The agreement “provides a framework to develop programs designed the educational experience of students attending both schools”, according to the press release issued by SHSU officials.

Dr. David S. Burris, SHSU Articulation Coordinator, said there is a distinct correlation between junior college transfer students and higher graduation rates at universities.

“Statistically, the college to university transfer student success rate is very closely tied to the total number of academic hours transferred,” Burris said. “Sam Houston State University’s transfer success rate closely mirrors that of the nation as a whole. Our experience shows students transferring with 20 hours or less seldom remain at the university more than two semesters. Students transferring with at least 30 hours of academic college credit are very likely to graduate. Students transferring with 40 or more academic hours of transfer credit are almost twice as likely to graduate.

“Angelina College transfer students are highly desirable due to their preparation for university level work and high success rate.”

Some of the programs included in the agreement are Web-based articulation agreements, reverse transfers, joint admission, cooperative advising and time-compressed degree programs.

“Reverse Transfer” allows students to transfer course work from Sam Houston State University back to Angelina College to complete requirements for the associate degree. This program is specifically designed to allow students to receive the advantages pursuant to the associate degree when they leave the Angelina College prior to degree completion.

“Joint Admission” provides students a mechanism to maximize utilization of facilities and programs offered jointly by Angelina College and Sam Houston State University. Programs in Joint Admission include: The ability to attend both schools simultaneously or alternately; an SHSU ID; an SHSU computer/internet account; library access; access to sporting events; free electronic transfer transcript evaluation; student access to their transcript online with degree plan generation software prior to actually enrolling at Sam Houston State University; and reduced application fees to Sam Houston State University.

“Cooperative Advising” allows qualifying college counselors the ability to access transfer transcripts and degree plan generation software via the web to advise students in transfer programs. A Traveling Advisor Program is also available where SHSU advisors visit students at their colleges.

“Time Compressed Degree Programs” provides the potential for students to simultaneously complete both the high school diploma and associate degree in four years at Angelina College, the baccalaureate degree in two additional years at Sam Houston State University, and a master’s degree in one additional year for a total of seven years.
