Artist Denise Davis to Open Exhibition at Angelina Center for the Arts Gallery

Local artist and educator Denise Stringer Davis will present her collection of works in a one-artist exhibition titled “THIS” beginning Tuesday, Oct. 6th and running through Oct. 27th at the Angelina Center for the Arts Gallery on the Angelina College campus.

An artist’s reception will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6th. The reception is free to the public.

AC art instructor Robbie Roach called the upcoming exhibition “one of the most intriguing and thought-provoking collections that will be shown in AC’s Art Gallery this academic year.”

“Mrs. Davis’ work is marked by a quiet profundity, deep in meaning and rich in personal aura,” Roach said in a statement. “The show will consist of prints and sculptures that are distinctly delicate and minimal while carrying unexpected psychological power.

“Memory, social issues, family and human concerns are made visible in these strong artworks.”

The artist holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Arts in Printmaking from Stephen F. Austin University. After completing the MA, Davis was awarded a full scholarship and teaching assistantship at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, where she earned her terminal degree, the MFA, in Printmaking. She then taught at UT Arlington, reinventing the Printmaking program there, and also taught Printmaking and Design at TCU.

Mrs. Davis has won numerous awards for her artwork as well as her teaching. She has conducted workshops at many prestigious conferences, including an international workshop at the University of Peru in Lima. Her prints and book arts are held in many private and major collections, including the Oxford University Library Special Collections in England.

Mrs. Davis returned to Lufkin and began serving as the Founding Director of the First Street Arts Center before returning to the teaching profession. She currently serves as an art instructor at Lufkin High School, but continues to exhibit her artworks in major shows throughout the U.S.

“It’s the Little Things” is one of several works scheduled for display during “THIS” – a one-person art gallery presenting the work of artist and educator Denise Davis. The gallery will open with an artist’s reception from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 6th in the Angelina Center for the Arts Gallery. Davis’ works will remain on display through Oct. 27th.
