Lady Roadrunners Set Record for Wins
Lady Roadrunners 91, Tyler 69

AC head coach Byron Coleman received a plaque during pre-game Sophomore Day ceremonies as tribute to his 100th career win as the Lady Roadrunners’ head coach.

His team then went out and established a milestone of its own, this one also of the team variety.

The Lady Roadrunners (25-5, 13-5) embedded themselves into the AC record books with their 25th win of the season, taking down rival Tyler 91-69 Saturday at Shands Gym.

On hand to offer the first handshake was former Lady ‘Runner head coach Dwan Coleman, who brought Byron Coleman into the fold several years ago as an assistant before passing the torch.

“Coach (Dwan) Coleman set the foundation for this program a long time ago,” Coleman said afterward. “I’ve said every year since I just wanted to continue to improve every year.

“This year’s group of players has been very special, one of the best I’ve had as a coach. They took a lot of pride in the season, and today showed it.”

Tyeka Ranton led all scorers with 26 points, followed by Marcy Robinson and Carenn Baylor with 16 each and Donia Naylor with a double-double, 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Jasmine King led the Lady Apaches with 16 points and eight boards. Teammate CeMonay Newell tallied all 15 of her points on five three pointers. Nakia Ollison and Latika Smith each scored 12 for Tyler.

The Lady Roadrunners will have an opportunity to add to their season-win totals with the Region XIV tournament scheduled to begin on Friday. Angelina College will enter the tourney as the second seed, and will play on Thursday. Time and opponent will be announced later in the week, with several conference teams still with regular-season games to play Tuesday.

“The most important thing for any team heading into the tournament is to be playing as well as you can,” Coleman said. “We’ve had times in the past where we peaked too early, and we faded quickly in the tournament.

“But we’ve won seven straight, and our players are really performing at a high level. We need to continue this if we want to win the tournament.”
