Angelina College Surgical Technology Class Recognizes National Surgical Technologists Week

This week, Sept. 18-24, is National Surgical Technologists Week, according to the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST). The week is “an opportunity to promote the profession and educate the community about the vital role that surgical technologists play in the O.R. (operating room).”

Accordingly, Angelina College’s own Surgical Tech class will focus on the week as a means of not only preparing its current class for graduation in December, but to also spread the word regarding the value of “Surg Techs” throughout the medical community.

“This week is all about promoting the profession,” AC Surgical Technology instructor Tonya LaForge said. “It’s a week to create awareness, and this is especially important in this area just because we’re one of the newer programs at Angelina College. We’re trying to spread the word, so to speak.”

In doing so, LaForge and her current class – just the third class of Surgical Technologists in the school’s history – will express its gratitude to several local members of the medical community who go out of their way to guide the students.

“We’re going to recognize 35-40 preceptors from the area who really help us and work with the students all year long,” LaForge said. “They take a lot of their own time to ensure our students are prepared to work in the field as soon as they graduate.”

LaForge’s students began the current course in January and are on track to graduate this December. Those students include Kaleigh Powell, Monique Delarosa, Trudi Harbuck, Josh Parrott, Brianna Williamson and Ashley Wheeler.

“They’re pretty excited right now,” LaForge said of her group. “This is their last semester. They recently started ‘back clinicals’, and they have 244 hours to fulfill before graduation.

“After that, they’ll be working in the field of Surgical Technology.”
