Typically, any basketball team featuring a completely new roster can expect growing pains. It takes time for the players to jell, meaning the aspect of learning to play together could take months.

Not so for the 2017-2018 version of the Angelina College Roadrunners, according to head coach Kyle Manary.

Having seen his team in action in several pre-season scrimmages, Manary said what stands out the most is the team’s unselfish attitude and willingness to make teammates look good.

“We just have a group of unselfish kids, great character kids,” Manary said. “They want to make everyone around them better. It’s just who they are, and they get as excited about an extra pass as they would if they made the shot. It just comes naturally to them. We do a lot of drills on it, but it’s more a part of their personalities.

“It’s the sign of a really good team when you’re as happy to see a teammate succeed as you are for yourself.”

The Roadrunners will offer a glimpse of this year’s squad – a group picked in pre-season polls to finish second in the Region XIV conference’s South Zone – in a Saturday scrimmage against Cy Fair Prep. The game takes place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at Shands Gymnasium.

Prior to the contest, the Roadrunners will offer a free “Runnin’ with the Roadrunners” skills clinic. Manary said the clinic is open to girls and boys ages 8 through 18 and will take place from 2:30 to 3:30 at Shands Gymnasium. Following the clinic, all youngsters in attendance will get into the 4 p.m. game for free. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own basketballs.

Manary added while he likes where his team is progressing, there’s still room for work.

“The biggest thing I think we need to improve is learning to play hard all the time instead of picking our spots,” Manary said. “In the scrimmages we’ve had so far, we’ve competed hard and we’ve played well.

“As long as we can get one percent better every day, we’re going to be where we need to be when it counts.”

Admission to Saturday’s scrimmage is free.
