Angelina College’s student publications staff members won 12 awards at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association convention in Corpus Christi March 13-16.
The Pacer newspaper won second place for best of show in Division 3 for on-site excellence in student media. The Pacer also won a second place in the Best of Show contest for the March 21, 2018 issue.
First-place recipients include Richard Hardesty and Austin Anderson for a feature page design in the Feb. 20, 2018, issue; Hardesty and Brandin Brewster for the sports page design in the April 3, 2018, issue; and Hardesty for a photo story on welding.
Second-place recipients include Keegan Mitchell for a general news story regarding parking fees; Jennifer Banks for front-page newspaper design in the April 3, 2018, issue; Gabriel Tovar for an editorial cartoon about Trump’s border wall; and Hardesty for an illustration of a Buffalo Solider.
Third-place recipients include Holly Harvey for a general news column about music and Jordan Abbott for opinion/editorial page design in the Feb. 20, 2018, issue.
Hardesty also won honorable mentions for a sports action photo of Taylor Meaux, AC baseball player, and for an illustration of actor/martial artist Michael Jai White.
The convention offered many live contests for students to enter such as news and sports writing, copyediting, feature writing, radio announcing, yearbook and magazine design and several photography contests.
Also, during the convention many workshops having to do with photography, design, writing leads, drone journalism and many other topics were held.
TIPA was established in 1909 at Baylor University, who hosted nine Texas schools. It was organized to improve college journalism, to raise the standard of college publications and to bring the colleges and editors into a closer and more vital relationship.
TIPA is the oldest and largest intercollegiate press association in the nation.
