The Sign Language program will prepare students mainly for employment as
interpreters for the deaf and hard of hearing students in public schools.
The focus is primarily on public schools from kindergarten through high school.
The interpreter serves the student and school to interpret the classroom
teacher's instruction and direction.
The interpreter attends the class with the student being assisted. Also, the interpreter assists the deaf education
teachers in classrooms specifically for deaf and hard of hearing students.
Interpreters serve under the direction of the Director of Deaf Education/Services for the independent school district. Interpreters are
assigned based on proficiency levels and the need of the student. Lufkin ISD
and Nacogdoches ISD serve other school districts within and outside their
counties.
Other interpreting opportunities are available in various religious organizations, social service agencies, hospitals, colleges, and judicial
systems. Specific certification levels are required for each type of
interpreting service rendered for the deaf or hard of hearing. An appropriate certification credential must be obtained from the Board of
Evaluation of Interpreter engaging in interpreting.
Certification
Graduates will need one or more years of practice and experience before they are able to challenge the State of Texas, Level I interpreter
certification. Interpreters are certified by the Board of Evaluation of
Interpreters. There are five levels of certification, each progressively
more difficult and, therefore, requiring more years of experience and specialized training.
