HVACR Certification and Credentialing


The following information provides brief descriptions of the EPA 608 and EPA 609 certification and credentialing programs.  The certification exams are administered on the computer at the end of each semester.

Section 608 Technician Certification:

Section 608 of the Federal Clean Air Act requires persons who work with or purchase regulated refrigerants for stationary equipment to become certified through a CLOSED book exam.

This examination is a total of 100 questions, broken down into four sections:  Core, Type-I, Type-II and Type-III.  The certification types are defined as follows:

Type-I: Required for servicing small appliances
Type-II: Required for servicing or disposing of high-pressure appliances, except small appliances and MVACs
Type-III: Required for servicing or disposing of low-pressure appliances
Universal: Earned when a candidate successfully passes all four sections of the exam.

Candidates must pass the Core section along with one or more of the Types to earn a certification.

Materials Allowed: A calculator (four-function preferred,) a pressure/temperature chart and scratch paper. Provided by testing center.
Exam Time Limit: 2 hours
Passing Score Required: 70% or better on each section
Prerequisites: None

Candidates who are retesting do not need to retake any sections in which they have received a passing score.  Candidates can retake the test (at no charge) a maximum of four (4) times. If additional testing is required to obtain certification after a total of five(5) exams, it will require the purchase of an additional exam credit. A daily limit of two (2) retests per person, per day is in effect.

Section 609 Technician Certification:

Section 609 of the Federal Clean Air Act requires any person repairing or servicing motor vehicle air conditioners to certify to the EPA that they have acquired and are properly using approved equipment, and that each individual authorized to use the equipment is properly trained and certified under Section 609.  Only Section 609 Certified Motor Vehicle A/C technicians can purchase refrigerants in any size container from auto supply houses for use in cooling the passenger compartment of vehicles.

Materials allowed: A calculator (four-function preferred), a pressure/temperature chart and scratch paper.  Provided by testing center.
Exam Time Limit:  Not timed
Passing Score Required:  84%

The on-line certification test contains 50 multiple choice questions. The exam is OPEN book.
