The annual “Meet the Roadrunners” banquet traditionally has helped kick off the Angelina College athletics programs as they enter their respective seasons.
This year’s gathering will have a little extra “kick” in the kickoff.
Tony Casillas, a two-time (’93, ’94) Super Bowl champion with the Dallas Cowboys and a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, will address the crowd and spend time meeting with those in attendance. As a member of the Oklahoma Sooners’ football team, Casillas won the coveted Lombardi Award in 1985 – only the second Sooner ever to win the award – as the nation’s best lineman and was named Academic All-American. Originally drafted by the Atlanta Falcons as the overall No. 2 pick in the 1986 NFL draft, Casillas joined the Cowboys via trade in 1991.
Foundation member Wes Welch, a personal friend of Casillas’, said Casillas’ work with several charity organizations – including the Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure and the Texas Can Academies – prompted an invitation to address the Roadrunners.
Hosted by the Roadrunner Foundation, the banquet has area sponsors to thank for making this year’s event even better. Sponsors have made it possible to provide tickets to the banquet for kids who might not otherwise get this type of opportunity. Each one of the tickets include a floor seat and a meal with the Roadrunner athletes; the tickets are being distributed through Impact Lufkin.
“The community really stepped up to help the Roadrunner Foundation with this event,” Welch said. “Angelina College is an important part of Lufkin and the surrounding area, and this was a great way to introduce our youth to the college.”
The banquet takes place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, August 26 at Shands Gymnasium on the Angelina College campus.
