Black History Month Events

In February, 1986, the United States Congress designated the month of February as the “National Black History Month.” The observance of Black History Month “provides opportunities for our Nation’s public schools, institutions of higher learning, and the [general] public to gain a deeper understanding and knowledge of the many contributions of Black [African] Americans to our country and the world.” (Public Law 99-244)

This year’s national theme is “Black Resistance: Grit, Faith, and Perseverance.”
