Angelina College Athletics Weekly Update

Hey, sports fans,

This past week, our Angelina College soccer teams played a couple of tough games on the road in Brenham, while our baseball team sent five players to the Texas-New Mexico JUCO All-Star event at Dallas Baptist University in Dallas.

And while our Roadrunner baseball guys have already begun their fall season of competition, the Lady ‘Runner softball squad has been revving up to open its own fall schedule starting this week. Some of the players were on-hand at a recent Lufkin High School football game to help present a scholarship to a fan.

In addition, AC athletic director and men’s head basketball coach J.J. Montgomery was featured on a prestigious recruiting program.

This coming week will see our soccer teams still traveling, while the rest of the campus gears up for the annual “Dinner at the Diamond” event scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 26.

We are AC, and we’re ready to Run ‘Em.

Here’s a quick rundown of recent events, along with what’s coming up next:

Lady Roadrunners Soccer Drops Heartbreaker at Blinn

Once again, the Lady Roadrunners put up a solid defensive battle all match long, only to fall just short of a win.

Blinn’s Lady Bucs tallied a goal just a minute into the second half, riding that lone score to a 1-0 victory over AC’s ladies Friday in Brenham.

The Lady Roadrunners (3-6, 3-4) will be in Brownsville on Friday (Sept. 25) to face Texas Southmost College (2-4, 2-4) in a match scheduled to kick off at 2 p.m.

Roadrunner Soccer Draws with Blinn

Last October, the Roadrunner soccer team pulled off a miraculous, last-second win over Blinn College in a playoff game, with AC scoring just five seconds before a possible penalty shootout.

This past Tuesday, the Bucs returned the favor.

With the ‘Runners leading 2-1, Blinn managed to tie the score with barely a minute remaining in the match, leaving the teams in a final 2-2 draw. Leeyon Phelan and Kanta Maruyama scored the AC goals, with Angel Benitez assisting on both.

The Roadrunners (3-2-1, 3-1-1) still hold the top spot on the Region XIV South Zone. AC will play Texas Southmost College at 4:30 p.m. Friday in Brownsville.

Annual “Dinner at the Diamond” Taking Place on Saturday, Sept. 26

Angelina College’s annual “Dinner at the Diamond” has become one of the area’s “must-see” social events, and this year’s version promises more of the same excitement and atmosphere.

Held right on the field of AC’s Poland Stadium, home of the Roadrunner baseball team, Dinner at the Diamond is one of the college’s biggest fund-raising events, bringing together local businesses, community leaders and members, students, and college staff to raise funds for scholarships, Student Emergency Aid, Meningitis Vaccines, and the Roadrunner Food Market at Angelina College. Attendees can enjoy a memorable evening of delicious food, live entertainment, and a silent auction. More than 750 people attended in 2025, and this year’s event promises to surpass those numbers.

Angelina College athletes, along with students from other programs such as the Law Enforcement Academy and Fire Academy, assist with the entire event.

Lady Roadrunner Softball Opens Fall Season on Friday

There have been tons of intrasquad scrimmages taking place on the Lady Roadrunner softball field the past few weeks, and now AC’s ladies will finally get to face some other competition.

The Lady ‘Runners will open their fall season on Friday with a 1 p.m. game at Nelson University in Waxahachie. At present, AC doesn’t have any home games on the fall schedule, but that may change in the next few weeks.

Montgomery Featured on Revocruit Session

AC’s athletic director and head men’s basketball coach J.J. Montgomery was the feature guest on a recent Revocruit “RevoStudios” session. Revocruit is considered one of the nation’s top recruiting platforms for college players and coaches.

Of Montgomery, Revocruit said, “Montgomery has established Angelina as a program capable of competing on the national stage while continuing to develop players for the next level. From wearing the jersey to leading the entire athletic department, Montgomery is continuing to leave his mark on Angelina College.”

Basketball Schedules Available for Viewing

We’re still a couple of months away from the start of basketball season, but the Roadrunner and Lady Roadrunner teams already have their 2026-2027 schedules in place. Visit the Angelina College Athletics website (angelinaathletics.com) to view those schedules.

Hoops season is going to get here before we know it.

For those who just can’t wait to know, the Lady Roadrunners tip off their regular season Oct. 30 in Baton Rouge against Delgado Community College, following with another game on Saturday against Baton Rouge Community College – also taking place in Baton Rouge. The Lady ‘Runners host their first home game on Nov. 6 against Southern University-Shreveport.

On the men’s side, the Roadrunners open their new regular season with a home game against Strength ‘N Motion on Nov. 2 at Shands Gymnasium.

AC Baseball, Softball Fall Schedules:

The Roadrunner baseball team will open its Fall 2026 schedule this week with an away game against Alvin Community College. The ‘Runners and Dolphins will square off at Lamar University in Beaumont, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4.

Here are the fall schedules for both the Roadrunner baseball and Lady Roadrunner softball teams. NOTE: These are exhibition games, so there won’t be any live streaming available, nor will there be stats or final scores posted.

Potential Schedule Changes:

As always in East Texas, the potential exists for schedule changes because of inclement weather. We try to put out the word as soon as we get it, but the quickest way to confirm game days and times is to visit the AC Athletics website (angelinaathletics.com) to view the most updated schedules. We’ll also send out word on social media (AC Athletics Facebook and Instagram, etc.), but the on-line schedule will always serve up the most recent updates.

Live Streaming Reminder:

All AC Athletics regular-season home games are live streamed on TSBN Sports (a free streaming service for fans), with most of the conference road games also available for streaming. (This does not include baseball and softball fall games, as those are not considered official games.)

Once TSBN posts its schedules, AC fans simply need to visit the AC Athletics web site, look at the scrolling schedule in the middle of the page and click the blue “Video” link.

TSBN also offers an app great for smart phones, devices and smart TVs. (You’ve GOT to see those matches and games on the big screen.)
