Chapter 30 – Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty
The Montgomery GI Bill® Active Duty (Chapter 30) provides up to 36 months of education benefits to eligible veterans and service members who have served on active duty. Benefits are paid directly to the student on a monthly basis and may be used for approved degree and certificate programs at Angelina College.

Chapter 31 – Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E)
Chapter 31 – Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E)
Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E), also known as Chapter 31, assists eligible veterans and service members with service-connected disabilities in preparing for, obtaining, and maintaining suitable employment. In some cases, the program may also provide support for educational and training expenses at Angelina College.
Student Responsibilities
- Apply and be approved through the VA VR&E program
- Work with an assigned VR&E Counselor
- Submit authorization documents to Veteran Services prior to certification
- Enroll only in courses required for your approved degree plan

Chapter 33 – Post-9/11 GI Bill®
Chapter 33 – Post-9/11 GI Bill®
The Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) provides up to 36 months of education benefits to eligible veterans, service members, and qualifying dependents who have served on active duty after September 10, 2001. Benefits may include payment of tuition and fees, a monthly housing allowance, and a book stipend while attending Angelina College.
Student Responsibilities
- Apply for benefits through the VA
- Submit a Certificate of Eligibility (COE) and required documents to Veteran Services
- Register for courses required for your degree plan
- Notify Veteran Services of any schedule changes
Tuition and fees are paid directly to the college, while housing and book payments are typically sent directly to the student by the VA.
Please note: Some fees or charges may not be covered by Chapter 33 VA education benefits. Students are responsible for any remaining balances not paid by the VA, including non-mandatory fees, late fees, or charges not approved for coverage.

Chapter 35 – Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA)
Chapter 35 – Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA)
Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Chapter 35) provides education benefits to eligible spouses and dependents of certain veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition, missing in action, or deceased as a result of military service. Benefits may be used toward approved degree and certificate programs at Angelina College.
Chapter 35 benefits are paid directly to the student on a monthly basis by the VA. Students are responsible for paying tuition, fees, and any remaining balances to the college.

Chapter 1606 – Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve
The Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606) provides education benefits to eligible members of the Selected Reserve, including the National Guard and Reserve components of the Armed Forces. Benefits may be used for approved degree and certificate programs at Angelina College.
Chapter 1606 benefits are paid directly to the student on a monthly basis by the VA. Students are responsible for paying tuition, fees, and any remaining balances to the college.

Hazlewood Act
Hazlewood Act
The Hazlewood Act is a Texas education benefit that provides qualified veterans, spouses, and dependent children with an exemption of tuition and certain fees at public colleges and universities in Texas, including Angelina College.
Eligible students may receive up to 150 credit hours of tuition exemption through the Hazlewood Act or Hazlewood Legacy Program. This benefit does not cover all fees, books, supplies, or living expenses.
Student Responsibilities
- Complete the Hazlewood Act Application each semester
- Submit all required supporting documentation
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress
- Register for courses required for your degree plan

Tuition Assistance Program (TA)
Tuition Assistance Program (TA)
Tuition Assistance (TA) is a military education benefit available to eligible active-duty service members, National Guard members, and Reservists through their branch of service. TA may help cover tuition costs for approved courses and programs at Angelina College.
Student Responsibilities
- Request TA approval through your military education portal prior to the start of classes
- Submit approved TA authorization documents to Veteran Services
- Register only for courses required for your degree plan
- Pay any tuition, fees, or charges not covered by Tuition Assistance
TA Does Not Cover
- Books and course materials
- Taking the same course twice
- Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
Important Information
You may be required to reimburse Tuition Assistance funds already paid if any of the following occur:
- Leaving military service before the course ends
- Withdrawing from a course for reasons other than personal illness, military transfer, or mission requirements
- Failing a course
TA policies and coverage amounts vary by military branch. Students should contact their Education Services Officer (ESO) or military counselor for eligibility and application requirements.

Workforce & Continuing Education (Non-Credit Courses)
Workforce & Continuing Education (Non-Credit Courses)
Eligible veterans, service members, and dependents may be able to use certain VA education benefits for approved Workforce & Continuing Education non-credit programs offered through Angelina College. These programs are designed to provide career training, workforce development, and industry-recognized certifications.
VA approval and benefit eligibility for non-credit courses may vary by program and benefit chapter. Students should contact Veteran Services prior to enrollment to determine eligibility and required documentation.
Student Responsibilities
- Verify that the program is VA approved
- Submit required VA documentation prior to enrollment
- Register only for approved courses within the program
- Notify Veteran Services of any schedule changes or withdrawals

Minimum Academic Standards for Students Receiving VA Educational Benefits
Students receiving VA educational benefits at Angelina College are required to maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) in accordance with college and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) policies.
Academic Expectations for VA Educational Benefits
Students are expected to:
- Maintain the minimum cumulative GPA required by the college
- Successfully complete courses required for their degree or certificate program
- Make measurable progress toward their educational goal
- Avoid excessive withdrawals, repeated courses, or unsuccessful grades
Students placed on academic probation or suspension may have their VA educational benefits affected. Failure to meet academic standards could result in the interruption or termination of VA benefit certification.
Repeated courses may only be certified for VA benefits under certain conditions and must comply with VA regulations.
Students are encouraged to contact Veteran Services and Academic Advising if they experience academic difficulties or are considering dropping or withdrawing from courses.

Q: What type of benefit am I eligible for?
A: The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs determines eligibility for benefits. Angelina College cannot make this determination.

In the “How do I apply?” section, select the green “Find your education benefits form” button. Answer the questions on the screen, then select the green “Apply now” button to complete your application online.
A: The typical VA processing time is about 30 days. After processing, a Certificate of Eligibility will be mailed to you with information about your eligibility or ineligibility.
Q: Do I need to request certification every semester?
A: Yes. Students must submit the VA Certification Request Form / Tx Hazlewood
in the MyAC Portal each semester they wish to use benefits.

A: Required documents may vary based on the benefit chapter being used. Documents may include:

Q: Why did I not receive a payment between semesters?
A: Most VA education benefits only pay for the dates classes are in session. If there is a break between semesters, you may not receive a payment during that time.

A: Dropping or withdrawing from courses may affect your VA benefits and could result in a debt owed to the VA or the college.
Students should contact Veteran Services before making schedule changes whenever possible.
Q: What courses can be certified for VA benefits?
A: Only courses required for your declared degree or certificate program can be certified for VA education benefits.
Q: Can I take courses at another school while using VA benefits at Angelina College?
A: Possibly. Students may be able to take courses at another institution through a parent school and secondary school arrangement if the courses are required for their degree program at Angelina College.
Prior approval and a Parent School Letter are typically required before courses can be certified for VA education benefits.
Students should contact Veteran Services before enrolling at another institution to ensure courses are eligible and proper documentation is completed.

A: Some students may qualify to use both benefits depending on eligibility and remaining entitlement.
