Meet a Smith-Hutson Scholar

Amber Wilburn

What does Smith-Hutson mean to you?
Smith-Hutson means opportunity and community. The Smith-Hutson Scholarship program has brought so much opportunity into my life that I otherwise would have never had, including a debt free associate level education and working towards my bachelor’s degree. They also prioritize creating community between the scholarship recipients, program coordinators, and scholarship committee members that stretches past graduation.

Take us briefly through your educational journey:
I started at AC with the intention of completing my associates degree in diagnostic ultrasound technology. After completing my first year of prerequisites, I had the opportunity of interviewing for the Smith-Hutson Scholarship and was awarded the scholarship for the next academic year. After the first semester of the ultrasound program, I decided to change my major to business. I graduated from AC with my Associate of Arts in General Studies in December of 2022 and transferred to Stephen F. Austin State University in January of 2023. I am now a second semester junior majoring in Human Resource Management and am scheduled to graduate with my Bachelor of Business Administration degree in December of 2024.

How did Smith-Hutson impact your educational journey?
After completing my first year of college, I was awarded the Smith-Hutson Scholarship until I graduated from AC in December of 2022. The scholarship allowed me to graduate from AC debt free. Smith-Hutson allowed me to have financial freedom and focus on my studies in a way I would not have been able to do without it. It also allowed me to make friends with other scholarship recipients and have been able to carry those friendships into the next steps of my journey.

What would you tell prospective applicants?
As a potential candidate, the greatest thing you can do is apply! If the committee does not have your application, they will be unable to know of your potential. I would also say to try to avoid feeling discouraged if you do not get interviewed the first year you attend AC. Try again next year and you may be chosen as a finalist! It is absolutely worth your time and effort to apply to this life-changing scholarship.
