Before the first tee shot on Saturday, Angelina College’s 19th Annual Guy Davis Golf Tournament at Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin got off to a rousing – and emotional – start by honoring the tourney’s namesake.
During Friday’s “Welcome Banquet,” a crowd of well-wishers, including family members and a number of Davis’ former players, took time to pay tribute to the man who first began his coaching career at AC 50 years ago back in 1976. For 46 years, Davis served as both head men’s basketball coach and Athletic Director; he’d notch more than 500 wins in his coaching career while overseeing the overall growth of the college’s athletic programs.
One of Davis’ first team captains, Jim Sandridge, presented “Coach” a plaque listing all the players from Davis’ very first Roadrunner team.
At Saturday’s golf tournament, 50 teams consisting of five players each competed in a scramble format featuring two shotgun starts (morning and afternoon starts). AC athletes, coaches and staff assisted in various roles throughout the tournament, with their duties including setting up the course, manning the holes, driving carts, keeping scorecards and shooting team pics.
Team Can’t Handicap Heart in Flight 1 topped the field after shooting a -25 for the day. Team members included Jack Kennedy, Cragg Todd, Josh Zeleskey, Matt Courtney and Ryan Self.
Following are the remaining winners of each flight, along with their final scores:
Flight 2, TTJ Equipment (-18): Brad Franks, Brandon Williams, Marty Hensley, Trey Hensley and Reid Hensley.
Flight 3, Morgan Insurance Company (-18): Shawn Woods, Jeffery Horn, Jason Haskins, Allen Chhay and Katie James.
Flight 4, R&R (-13): Chris Rupp, Donnie Randell, Kyle Hollister, Kyle Van Hook and Rusty Pendergrast.
Flight 5, Ford (-11): Chase Ford, Greg Nobles, Kyle Guevara, Travis Elizalde and Kade Ford.
Proceeds from the tournament benefit all the Angelina College athletics programs. The Roadrunner Foundation hosts the event every year, with members including Mark Weidenfeld, Wes Welch, Josh Tindall, Trey Hensley, Josh Ridings, Blake Cook, Grady Hughes, Jack Kennedy and Jim Barrett. In addition, numerous sponsors throughout the area contribute vital resources to ensure the tournament’s success.
